Emergency Student Loan Program

Alaska Pacific University offers current students who experience unexpected financial difficulties an opportunity to apply for an emergency student loan. These loans are designed to help students manage short-term, unexpected financial crises - they are not a substitute for regular financial aid awards. There is a $1,000 limit on the loans and most awards are from $100 to $500.

Funding for the program comes from several sources. Generous donations were received from the friends, family, and business associates of Joseph Sanchez who was the first president of the Saturn Corporation and from TOTE, an Alaskan transportation company. Students now rely on other students to repay Emergency Student Loans in order to keep the resources recycling from one student to another.

Students may apply through the Dean of Students for one loan per enrollment period. Emergency loans are provided to address the following short-term crises: emergency travel due to illness or death of an immediate family member, unexpected equipment costs associated with block travel courses, medical emergencies, rent, food, childcare, or utility expenses.

Guidelines

To apply for the loan:

  • Students initially contact the Dean of Students (Atwood Center, 564-8287) and arrange am appointment.
  • Students are required to submit an application with supporting evidence of financial need and an explanation of the purpose for the loan.
  • Students with significant outstanding bills with the University and/or those on academic or financial aid probation cannot apply for this loan program.

Students with Financial Aid:

  • If the student has financial aid forthcoming and it has not been released in the current enrollment period, the student may not borrow more than the total of their available financial aid after their University obligations are paid in full, or $1000, whichever is less. If the student has financial aid coming in the next enrollment period, the student may not borrow more than the total of their expected financial aid after their expected university obligations are paid in full, or $350, whichever is less.
  • Students who have financial aid awards are required to satisfy their obligation to Alaska Pacific University before the balance of Financial Award funds are released by the Business Office.
  • Failure to repay the loan by the student will result in the student being placed on "Registration/Transcript Hold".

Students without Financial Aid:

  • If the student does not have financial aid forthcoming or their financial aid has already been released in the current enrollment period the student may borrow a maximum of $350.
  • Students who do not have financial aid available or who have financial aid previously released during the enrollment period may develop a repayment schedule with the Dean of Students.
  • Failure to repay the loan by the student will result in the student being placed on "Registration/Transcript Hold".
