1. When do I check in? Where do I check in?One of the most frequently asked questions pertains to move-in dates. Halls open at 9 a.m. for New Students only on August 22, 2006 - check in will be in the Residence Life Office on the 1st Floor of North Atwood. If your flight arrives prior to August 22, we recommend staying at one of the Hostels here in Anchorage. You may check into the Residence Halls at 9:00 am on your check-in day. The Residence Life Team will be available to help you settle in. The Residence Life staff knows and understands that relocating to a new and far away place can be somewhat overwhelming. If you are arriving by yourself, we will offer a shuttle service from the airport on Tuesday, August 16th. In order for us to accommodate you with this service, make sure to return the flight information form indicating your Name, Airline, Flight #, & Arrival time a week prior to your arrival. We will call you to confirm your pick-up day and time. 2. What if I get hungry? Where do I go to eat?Resident Dining will open with dinner on August 16th at 5:30 pm and you can eat as part of your meal plan. The dining center is located on the 2nd floor of the Atwood Center. If your parents or friends would like to join you, the cost of dinner is $6.50 per person. 3. Do I get a mailbox?Yes, all residents will have a mailbox assigned to them when they arrive. You can choose either a box with a key lock ($10 deposit for key) or one in the mailroom that has a combination lock. Once you are assigned a mailbox you need to visit to the mailroom in the bookstore to learn more about how our mail system works. Our mailroom is a full service facility Monday through Friday and closed on the weekends. You may purchase stamps, envelopes, boxes, and mail out packages and letters. Money orders cannot be processed in the APU mailroom. 4. Can I send some of my belongings prior to my arrival?Yes, you may send some of your things ahead of time. Make sure that they are properly packaged and sealed. Label your package with the following information: 5. What do I need to bring? May I decorate my room? All the rooms are furnished but there are some things that you will need to supply yourself. (See "What to Bring"). Sheets to fit a regular size twin mattress (estimated size 36" x 80"), blankets, pillows, comforters, shower rugs, towels, alarm clocks, and personal items. Toilet paper (North and South Atwood only) and shower curtains are provided. Talk with your roommates about stereos, TVs, CD players, tape players, etc. If you are a resident of North or South, cooking appliances such as toasters, toaster ovens, hot plates, and crock-pots are not allowed. Other appliances that are not allowed include portable heaters and halogen lights. Please remember that candles and incense are not allowed in the residence halls. These items have caused fires and deaths on other campuses and are considered a dangerous fire hazard. We feel that it is important that you personalize your space. Posters, plants, comforters, and a throw rug can help make your room feel more like home. However, we do ask that you avoid doing things that will damage the walls or woodwork. For example, transparent tape is almost impossible to clean off. Masking tape and self-adhesive hooks can be used with care. Carefully review the manufacturer's suggestions for removing these products. Blue tape and white adhesive putty is highly recommended because of their easy removal. The question to ask yourself is whether you will be able to return your room to its previously unimaginative condition at the end of your stay. If the answer is "no", then don’t do it. 6. May I have a refrigerator in my room? How do I get one?Compact portable refrigerators (size may not exceed 5.0 cubic feet, 36 inches in height and 1.5 amps) are permitted. Most students rent or buy mini refrigerators (2.7 cubic feet). These mini-refrigerators are available through a private company called Harold’s Commercial Laundry. This company rents these refrigerators on a first come, first serve basis. They cost $59.00 for a semester or $89.00 for the whole academic year. You may rent them ahead of time by calling (907) 278-4044 and leaving your credit card number with a representative. You are welcome to bring your own mini-refrigerator if you have one. 7. Do I need to bring my own telephone? You are welcome to bring your own phone if you have a favorite from home. Otherwise the Residence Life Office will provide basic touch-tone telephones to residents on a first come, first serve basis. Each room includes campus and local telephone service as part of the regular housing package. Long distance telephone service is not available through APU. Long distance phone cards card are the best way to call out of the local calling area. 8. Can I bring my own computer? Are the residence halls wired?Residents of North and South Atwood have a direct network connection through the jacks in the rooms. Computers with an Ethernet card will have fast access to the campus server and internet that will not tie up your phone line. University Village Houses are limited to modem lines. When you arrive, you will receive additional information explaining how to activate your data jack. If you do not own your own computer there are computer labs located throughout the campus for all students to use. 9. Can I bring weapons to campus?Firearms, explosives, and other weapons create a potential safety hazard and, therefore, the use or possession of these items is prohibited anywhere on University property including the residence halls. Weapons include, but are not limited to, knives with blades over five inches, swords, guns, pellet guns, bows and arrows, machetes, Ninja stars, fireworks, grenades, etc.10. Is parking available? Do I need a parking permit?Free parking is available to all students at APU. Students with vehicles are required to place a free parking sticker on your vehicle in order for the University to identify which vehicles belong to which students. Permits can be obtained through APU security. 11. Is there anywhere to do laundry? Must I save it until I go home? You may take all your dirty clothes home to get washed but it will probably impress your mom if you go home with clean clothes. The laundry room is located in the basement of Atwood Center and is for residents' use only. Each load is $1.00 to wash and $1.00 to dry. These machines only take quarters. A coin exchange machine and laundry detergent machine are located inside the laundry room. 12. What if I need to store something? Is there space available?Limited storage space is available in both North and South Atwood. Storage is free of charge and is only available to residents. Summer storage is also available, however it is limited to summer and fall residents (returning students). 13.
