Goal Statements

Setting goals is perhaps the most important of all the activities you will engage in as you assemble the portfolio. You may already have clearly defined goals. Many of us, however, profit from setting aside time to dream a little about impossibilities as well as possibilities. One exercise that might encourage you to stretch your expectations is included in Appendix B. Consider it a warm-up the more strenuous business of enumerating specific goals.

Personal goals: We all have personal goals and there may be no particularly good reason to divulge them here. Consider, however, which of your personal goals may impact on either of the other two sets of goals. For instance, if a personal goal of a father of young children is to be able to be at home with them half-days, the time-line for achieving his academic goals may need to be stretched out.

Academic goals: Sometimes it seems all we can think of us is trying to get through the particular term. This section invites you to lay out the more complete vision. Perhaps you hope to go to graduate school. In order to increase your chances of being accepted, you'll need to take certain required courses, maintain a specified GPA, score well on graduate entrance exams. Because these are requirements that impact on what you do now, they should be acknowledged aspects of your academic goals.

Career goals: More than ever before, people can expect to have more than one career during their lifetimes, but that doesn't mean you should just wait around to see what rushes your direction once the world sees you've graduated. You may not know exactly what your career goals are, but the more thoughtfully you consider them now, the better chance you'll have later of realizing a specific goal.
