Trips & Clinics

Clear Creek Jet Boat Fishing Trip

Spend the night on a remote gravel bar at the confluence of the Talkeetna River and the mouth of Clear Creek. Mahay's Riverboat service will ferry us 7 miles up the Talkeetna river where we will spend the night. Once at camp we will fish for silver salmon, artic grayling, dolly varden, and rainbow trout.
Pre-trip Meeting REQUIRED! : August 29th at 7-pm in the OP Center.

Rock Climbing Day Trip

Travel with OP to one of the many beautiful climbing areas along Turnagain Arm and spend the day polishing your skills on the rock. All experience levels are welcome as we will be setting up climbs for a wide array of skill levels. Equipment and instruction will be provided. Please bring a lunch and water for the day.

Mountain Biking

With miles of single track right out our backdoor now is the perfect time to come explore the trails Alaska has to offer. Join OP for a ride up to Powerline Pass and take in the views of the Anchorage Bowl and the fall foliage. This is a great trail for those wanting an introduction to single track and trail riding. Participants must provide their own bike, spare tube, patch kit, and helmet! Bring water and a few snacks for the trail!

Fall Colors Hike

Travel with us along the Turnagain Arm as we explore the trails and take in the vibrant displays of color as the leaves turn and fall is welcomed back to Alaska. Bring a sack lunch. Transportation provided.

Bike Maintenance Clinic

Have you ever wanted to learn how to repair or maintain your bike? Well now is your chance to learn the skills necessary to keep your bike tuned and ready to roll year round. This will be an introductory clinic covering the basics such as brakes, tires, tubes, chains, and derailleur. Tools and instruction will be provided.

Open Boating

Come practice your kayak skills in a warm, saline based-pool and meet up with other boaters to go paddle with. Use our boats or your own. Both Sea and Whitewater kayaks available (albeit a bit old), including paddle and skirt. Personal boats are allowed ONLY IF CLEAN!

Women's Backpacking

Ladies set aside those high heels and lace up your Hiking boots for a Women's only wilderness experience. Explore the Chugach State Park with our experienced female leader and Viking warrior descendant Dorte Krogh.

Introduction to Rock Climbing (Part 1)

A fun, safe, 2-part introduction to indoor rock climbing held at the OP Climbing Wall on the lowest level of the Atwood Center. Learn how to belay and climb.

Intro to Nordic Skiing

Want a new way to get outside in the winter? Give nordic skiing a go! This clinic is for newbies, so no excuses…come join us and give it a try. Try classic or skate skiing in a fun, non-intimidating atmosphere! With our low student-instructor ratio, someone will be there to help you every step of the way.

Hatcher Pass Cross Country Ski Trip

Head up to Hatcher Pass to go Nordic skiing. If you have never been, now is the time. Hatcher is a hanging valley filled with fresh powder and stunning views of the Matanuska Valley. No experience necessary, beginners are welcome. OP will provide ski equipment. Bring a lunch and water for the day. Price includes transportation, instruction, and most equipment.

Introduction to Telemark Skiing

Learn the basic techniques needed to ski the traditional way!! Be introduced to gear and techniques at the OP Equipment Room. Then we will grab our gear and head to Hilltop Ski Area to get some real experience! Telemark equipment available.
Lift ticket not included.

Alyeska Ski Trip

Spend a day ripping through the deep powder at Alaska's biggest ski resort. The variety of terrain offers something for everyone from beginner to expert. Telemark gear is available for rent in the OP Equipment Room. Meet in the OP Center. Discounted lift tickets are available.

Private Trips

Outdoor Programs can organize trips specifically for APU student groups (early honors, clubs, masters programs, etc), staff or faculty, Alumni groups or academic classes. It can be just a couple hours, a whole day, or a multi-day trip.

Go hiking, backpacking, rock climbing, ice climbing, Nordic skiing, winter camping, snowshoeing, canoeing, kayaking, or rafting. We can even organize service trips or challenge/team-building trips or clinics. Call or email us to set one up today!!!
