Getting Started With FTP

Since you're here, it is assumed that you have downloaded and installed an FTP program and want to learn how to transfer your HTML file to the server. If you haven't done that, you need to go to the Getting Started Page.

It is also assumed that you have created an HTML file or files to upload to the Server. If you have not, you can still use this lesson. If you need help creating HTML pages, there is an excellent site developed by Alan Levine, instructional technologist at the Maricopa Community Colleges - Writing HTML.

NOTE: You MUST have an e-mail account at alaskapacific.edu and have web space at APU before you can access the server

(For the purposes of this lesson, we will be working with the FileZilla FTP program that you can download from our site and using terms applicable to Windows XP.)

Step 1: Setup

  • After installing FileZilla, double-click on the FileZilla icon on your Desktop.

  • This will open the FileZilla application window. (Click for full-size image)

  • Click on File -> Site Manager...

  • This will bring up a setup screen. Click on the "New Site" button at the bottom.

  • A new site will appear in the screen above, ready for you to change the name

  • Set the name to something like AlaskaPacific and on the right hand side enter ftp.alaskapacific.edu in the field labled "Host:"

  • Click on "Normal" for the login type ...

  • Enter your FTP user name and password in the proper fields. (Optional: select the "Default" field to make this your default ftp site for FileZilla)

  • Click on the "Save and Exit" button.

Step 2: Connect

  • Click on the small down arrow next to the connect icon (the first icon on the left) and click on AlaskaPacific (or whatever you named the server above)

  • Upon connection there will be connection messages in the top pane, local directories listed on the left-hand side and remote directories listed on the right-hand side.

Step 3: Upload

  • In the left-hand pane browse to the directory that contains your files to be uploaded, select files by clicking on them, and then upload to the directory selected in the right-hand pane by double-clicking the selected files.

Step 4: Disconnect

  • To disconnect from the server, click on the icon with a red "X" on it. This will end your FTP session.

  • You will know that you are disconnected when the right-hand pane is empty.
