Anchorage is accessible 12 months a year via one of three methods of transportation: plane, boat, and automobile.

The Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport handles more than 260 flights per day, with service from all major carriers, and flight times are not what most people in the Lower 48 imagine. For example, New York City to Anchorage is only eight hours of actual flying time, Chicago is five and one-half, and Seattle is three.

The Alaska Marine Highway System operates ferries between Alaska's coastal cities and the State of Washington. Vessels that can easily accommodate automobiles travel through tranquil waters known as the Inside Passage.

Finally, the fabled Alaska Highway connects Alaska with the contiguous United States, making it possible to drive to Alaska from any other Lower 48 state. Now a fully paved highway, the Alcan (the highway's other name, referring to its Alaska-Canada roots) is not the same road as it was some 50 years ago, when it was forged out of the wilderness to connect Alaska with the rest of the country.
